Event Description

What are heroes? To those of us at Little Shelter, heroes are the VOLUNTEERS that so unselfishly devote their free time to help animals in need. April 19 through April 25 is “National Volunteer Appreciation Week” – a week to show these special people how much they mean. Little Shelter will be kicking-off “National Volunteer Appreciation Week” with a special celebration on Sunday, April 19 to honor our wonderful, hard working volunteers for their dedication and compassion for the hundreds of dogs and cats in our care. Thanks to the tireless efforts of our volunteers, Little Shelter has been able to save the lives of companion animals for more than 80 years. If asked to describe a typical Little Shelter volunteer it would be impossible – our volunteers come from a wide variety of backgrounds and include veterinarians, accountants, nurses, teachers, administrative professionals, students, business owners, retiree’s and many more.

The common goal for everyone at Little Shelter is to make life better for another living creature and our volunteers accomplish this in many different ways. Volunteers do ‘hands-on’ work with our animals, help with off-site events and fundraising, and assist with administrative duties. Volunteers can be seen walking, socializing or playing with a dog, cat, puppy and kitten and teaching them a new and important lesson – a lesson that many have never known – a human hand can hold gentleness, a human voice can be compassionate, and a human heart can love. At off-site events volunteers can be seen showcasing our animals and spreading the word about the wonderful work we do in the community. Other volunteers work tirelessly to raise funds, some make it their mission to find homes for the animals in our care, while still many more prefer to work behind the scenes answering telephones, doing computer work and many other tasks. Whatever their talent, Little Shelter has something to suit everyone.

If you would like to join Little Shelter’s team of volunteers, we would be happy to welcome you to our family. For more information on how you can join us, please call Anne at (631) 368-8770 x204 or email anne@littleshelter.com.
